Children's Listening Skills Give
Them Skills to Function and
Communicate Well in Society.

The important listening skills are listening to others, getting and processing information and in following instructions. Speaking and listening work together in a literacy program - good listening will allow for good speech development.

Listening to others and to stories allows children to develop vocabulary and helps with their reading.

Teaching children listening can be as easy as being a good role model to your children. Make a point of listening to your child when they are telling you something.

Show them the skills of good listening by stopping to focus on the speaker, looking at the person talking and acknowledging what they say by nodding or smiling.

There are many listening activities and games you can play with your children to help in improving speaking and listening. One good one is by purchasing stories on CD and allowing them to listen to them - they develop their skills in listening and it also helps foster imagination as they form the images of the stories in their heads.
